See a Broadway show and learn what it takes to make it in the theater, explore the interesting neighborhoods, see world famous museums, go rowing in Central Park, sample ethnic cuisine from around the world, see the 9/11 memorial site and understand what happened there and visit the National Headquarters of Girl Scouts of the USA!

National Headquarters houses approximately 400 staff working to serve over 100 Girl Scout councils and USA Girl Scouts Overseas, and a membership of over 3.5 million. Besides busy offices, there are some great things to look for if you take a tour, including the National Historic Preservation Center and the GSUSA shop.

The Girl Scouts of the USA headquarters also features a museum, open to the public, curated by the National Historic Preservation Center, and filled with the artifacts and ephemera that tell a story about strength and change. Centrally located just two blocks from the Empire State Building and ten blocks from Rockefeller Center, National Headquarters is a highlight of any trip to New York.

Find out more information

If you are interested in planning a trip to The Big Apple, you might like to look at this itinerary of a troop trip to NYC that included a week of service in Maine at Camp Sunshine.

Troop 5152 NYC Itinerary

6/24 Sunday check in 10:30pm for boarding, Delta 856

6/25 Monday Meet at 7:30pm, leave for the airport by 8pm Tracy, Julie and Michelle will drive (red eye flight overnight) Delta Airlines 856 leaves San Diego at 10:30pm arrives JFK at 6:50am. This weekend getaway was shared there. I thought it had some good tips!

Good morning! We are heading home in a few hours from a great and exhausting trip. Here are some photos of our trip and itinerary, which I tried to put together from a 13 year-old’s perspective (hence some scheduling in 5 or 10 minute intervals.) We are traveling today, so I didn’t include the Day 3 schedule.

A few points that may be of interest…
1) On a traveling day like ours, 2 hours at the Met was all the girls could take. We shortened the Met and went back to the hotel for a bit. With enough padded travel time, we were still able to eat at Joe’s and make it to the Staten Island Ferry on schedule.
2) The Hampton Inn Times Square Central elevators are awful. It took 20 minutes to get up and down from the lobby at peak times. But, if you get a tax-exempt form from your SU or Council, the tax free part is a breeze. We save $300 in hotel tax.
3) Out the door line by 20 people ahead of you (from the door) is a 15-minute wait. Be prepared to eat standing up.
4) Ellen’s Stardust Diner takes reservations for groups of 20 and above only. If you get there when they open at 7am, you will get in. We arrived at 7:30am and waited 40 minutes. Definitely worth it.
4) If you live in a major suburban area (we are in Tysons,VA) there is nothing unique about Times Square shopping beyond the M&Ms and Hershey stores. If you don’t live in such an area, the shopping could be fun.
5) We gave our Cadettes $50 cash per day for walk up counter meals and snacks. They could keep the change and use it however they pleased. They also were allowed to bring no more than $100 total spending money if their own. This was more than enough unless they wanted a hoodie or something big as a souvenir. It was fun to see them budgeting though.
6) If you take the Staten Island Ferry round trip, you need to get off and get back on to return.
7)We walked 10 miles our first day. Ugh. Put “no complaining” in your behavior contract. I heard the girls reminding each other.
8 ) Cost ended up at $750 per person (including Harry Potter show, but not personal spending $)
Thanks for a your planning help! We had a great trip. (Budget and itinerary photos soon.)

Another Facebook Group trip to NYC

This group was so helpful as my eighth grade Cadettes planned our trip, so we want to return the favor! 13 Scouts and four adults visited 10/12-10/16/22. Price was $800 per Scout (we had about $5k in the bank) and $1300 from parents.

Southwest flight direct from New Orleans: call their group booking hotline for the best rates.

Lodging: Hi Hostel:
Clean, safe and close to a subway stop. The bathrooms were big and clean. The pillows were regrettable. We added on bagged breakfast every morning and ate in the lovely courtyard. Each room had a set of lockers as closets, and if you could bring a little portable/adjustable shelf it would greatly improve the functionality.

Paid activities:
We decided against the City Pass because it was much cheaper to arrange for group rates.
Circle Line Highlights tour
Museum of Illusions
Met Museum
Top of the Rock

Broadway:
We booked a 90 minute Wicked workshop through Students Live. A dance captain/swing from the show taught us the music and choreography from part of a song, and we had a great Q&A with him. The entire workshop was fantastic. We went to lunch and then the matinee, and we’re pretty sure we saw him on the stage!
Wicked matinee ($89 ticket with no taxes or fees, also through Students Live)
http://www.passporttobroadway.com/program.php (The website is old but they’re legit!)

Food: We had adventurous eaters!
HanBat: Korean BBQ in Koreatown
Le Pain Quotidien:a couple blocks from the Met and they had a huge, 20 person table!
Near Hi Hostel:
Broadway Pizza and Mama’s Pizza (cash only)
*We asked for one pizza to be cut into 16 pieces since the slices are so big and they happily complied.
V&T: Italian (we called ahead for reservations)
Awash Restaurant: Ethiopian (we called ahead for reservations)
Junior’s in Times Square: you can join a virtual waitlist; huge portions

Free* activities:
Shopping on Fifth Avenue (The Lego Store was a hit!) and Times Square
American Girl Place
Cornelia Street (Taylor Swift fans know!) and the Friends apartment in Greenwich Village
Jessie’s apartment on the Upper West Side, just off Central Park
Stonewall monument (small park and the bar where the movement started)

Public transportation:
$33/traveler: after 12 trips, all additional trips within a seven day period are free.
We bought MetroCards at LGA. You can only buy two at a time from the ticket kiosks, so we bought 15 more at a Hudson’s store inside the airport. We took a bus to the hostel, and subways and buses the entire trip.
I think we could have had each girl use ApplePay to swipe through the turnstiles, but having one chaperone swipe in a group of girls helped us count heads and maintain safety protocols. I did a lot of research, and everything I found shows that using a MetroCard with ApplePay/OMNY will not give multiple riders the multi-trip discount, only for the first traveler. The system is evolving, but at this point we could not find a different workaround to ensure that we all got the weekly fare cap/7-day unlimited pass.
If the girls were a little older or travel-savvy, I think we would have tried the per-person phone swipe.

We had the girls create and sign a code of conduct. In hindsight, I should have had my chaperones sign one too. I had a couple hard conversations about sticking with the group with one of my parents, which really surprised me, but I guess you never know until you travel with someone.

We also had the girls wear their uniform vests, which was a big pain for most of the trip because a few really resisted, and if they wore them, they wore them under their jackets. I wish I had had the girls wear a colorful lanyard instead. But it made for cute photos!

I hope this is helpful to other troops! And I’m happy to answer any questions you may have!

There are so many reasons to visit New York City!
