Bridging Around the World
You’ve probably done a Daisy Bridging Ceremony in your local park, Brownies may have bridged at your school with other troops across a homemade bridge or with your service unit or council. Perhaps as Juniors your troop went to the Golden Gate Bridging in San Francisco. Now you’re wondering what next!? Where else can we go to “Bridge” to the next level. Here are some ideas.
Brooklyn Bridge NYC (this is a great walking bridge. I’ve heard that they have an organized event but when my troop did it we celebrated with ice cream from a little spot on the Brooklyn side and did the promise and law with NYC in the background and I handed out pins and patches.)
Highline NYC (this is another cool “bridge” on the raised tracks of an old railroad in the heart of NYC)
Chicago the BP Pedestrian Bridge (designed by Frank Gehry, this connects Millennium Park with Daley Park)
Las Vegas has Rock the Dam over Hoover Dam in May (They also give a Dam good tour and use the word Dam over and over much to the delight of the girls. You might combine this with a canoe or kayak trip.)
Washington DC the Met Branch Trail (connects Silver Spring MD to Union Station in the heart of the US Capitol. The bridge crosses the trail at the Rhode Island Ave Metro Station)
London Bridge or the Millennium Bridge in London, UK (the Millennium Bridge is another pedestrian bridge, made famous from the Harry Potter Half Blood Prince movie. With the Tate Museum on one side and St. Paul’s Cathedral near by on the other, it’s a cool place to be!)
Lisbon, Portugal the Ponte Segunda Circular bridge (a really interesting footbridge that stretches across a road for pedestrians and cyclists)
The Peace Bridge in Calgary, Alberta Canada (awesome red and white bridge spanning the Bow River)
The bridge to Mont-Saint Michel in France (off the coast of Normandy, this is the patch to the medieval french city of Mont Saint Michel. )
The Cau Vang “Golden Bridge”, in Danang, Vietnam is amazing. Check out the photos of the bridge crossing a giant hand.
Honestly, there are SO MANY!! Just google pedestrian bridges and see all the amazing places you can go! Or find the city of your troop’s dreams and see what bridging space you can come up with.
