What do we do if it Rains? – a Preparedness Game
I wanted to leave you with one more fun/useful thing to do. It’s a game you can play at a troop meeting this week..if you’re getting together one last time or at the airport while you’re waiting for your flight.
WHAT DO WE DO IF IT RAINS? A Preparedness Game….
Directions: Print and cut apart the questions on this sheet. Fold them in half and put them in a basket. Pass the basket and let each girl take a question and see if she can answer it. If not then you can help lead the group to discover the answer (included at the end.) This is about thinking ahead and understanding consequences and about being prepared. Feel free to add some of the 3 safety management items you put on your Activity Approval too!
1 ) You wake up on the morning of Bridging and it’s raining or really foggy or very windy. What do you do?
2) You’ve walked across the Golden Gate Bridge and you feel a blister on the back of your heel. What do you do?
3) You are exploring Chinatown and you see some cool back scratchers in one little store that you’d like to go in to look at but the rest of the troop is walking ahead. What do you do?
4) You leave your phone/ipod/wallet on the cable car. What do you do?
5) You forget to pack your toothbrush. What do you do?
6) The troop decides to eat in Chinatown but you’ve never liked Chinese food. What do you do?
7) You have been exploring the city all day and you’re too exhausted to walk another step. What do you do?
8) You plan a bus and BART route to get to the airport on Sunday morning and when you get to the BART you discover it doesn’t start running for another hour. What do you do?
9) You have found a $30 sweatshirt that says “I left my heart in San Francisco” but you only brought $20 for souvenirs. What do you do?
10) You are starving but the troop won’t be eating dinner for another 2 hours. What do you do?
11) The troop has decided to go to the Japanese Friendship Garden in Golden Gate Park but you think that sounds boring. What do you do?

1) We’ll look at the weather report a few days before the trip so we can be prepared. (Right now the forecast is for sunshine and temperatures from the 50s at night to the 60s during the day.) We’re going to do all the things we’ve got planned! The bridging goes on rain or shine. Make sure you take clothes for the weather. It can be cold, windy and wet out on the bridge even if it’s a nice day in the city. You’ll want a warm sweatshirt and a windbreaker and possibly a poncho.
2) Try to wear comfortable walking shoes and good socks for the walk. If you are prone to blisters then you might want to put mole skin over the spots where you think you might get a blister as a preventative. First aid for blisters is to cover them with a bandaid and clean sock. It’s good to have 2 bandaids in your backpack just in case. Remind the girls that you have all those things in your first aid kit.
3) Make sure that you always let an adult know where you are and stick with your buddy! Don’t ever go into a store without letting your buddy and an adult know!
4) Let an adult know right away. Try to figure out which cable car line you were on by noting the time. Call the cable car company to report the missing ipod. You are responsible for anything you bring on the trip. Check around your seat when you get up from the plane, bus, BART or cable cars. It might be best to leave expensive electronics and phones at home.
5) You can live without a toothbrush for the weekend. Rub your teeth with a damp paper towel, eat an apple, swish your mouth out with water. (You could also choose to buy one with your souvenir money.)
6) One of the great things about this trip is trying some new things. Even if you think you don’t like something it’s a good idea to try a little now and then to see if your tastes have changed. Try a bite of each dish and see what you think!
7) If you get tired you can ask the leader if it would be possible to catch a bus to the next destination. You can ask the group to take a rest. It’s a good idea to start doing some walking before the trip, so you won’t get too tired..but it may be too late for that now.
8) This happened to us! The BART train starts later on Sunday than it does on the other days. We still made our flight but it was a little close for comfort! Check to make sure the bus and BART will be running on Sunday when you make your plans.
9) Another thing that you should learn on this trip is how to budget. You will only have a certain amount for souvenirs and you’ll have to comparison shop to get the best deal and will have to stay within your limits. It’s not fair for the adults on the trip to purchase more for their daughter than the other girls have. Everyone has to keep to the same spending limits.
10) It’s a great idea to pack a granola bar or two in your backpack. If you are starving you can munch on one of those. It’s a good idea to have a bottle of water with you too.
11) It’s important for everyone to get a chance to share their ideas about what would be fun activities. There may be some things that you don’t want to do but I hope that you’ll get to choose at least one thing that the group will do and that you’ll have a good attitude about the things that you may not want to do as much. You may have more fun than you think!
